The door popped open with a sigh. Though by no means so extensive or commodious as the modern prison, Old Newgate was a large and strongly-built pile. It was evident the lady’s servant knew his mistress, for he had come equipped with a tray upon which reposed a decanter and two glasses. Like the Castle, which it resembled in all respects except that it was destitute even of a barrack-bedstead, the Red Room was reserved for state-prisoners, and had not been occupied since the year 1716, when the jail, as has before been mentioned, was crowded by the Preston rebels. Stunning and continuous, the din seemed almost to take away the power of hearing.
